Aphrodite was sometimes called Afrogeneia, which means born from the foam of the sea.
The Greek poet Hesiod (8th cent. B.C.) narrates in this Theogony how the world was created from Chaos:
first Earth and Sky were created then Night and Light. Earth created Sky and they engendered together
many horrible sons.

But Sky hated them and hid them in the bosom of Earth who suffocated.
Earth asked one of her sons to free her from their father. So Kronos mutilated Sky, cutting off his
genitals which fell into the sea and were carried by the waves for a long time. Foam was formed around them,
from which a beautiful maiden sprang. She first went to Cythera, and then to sea-girt Cyprus. Men called the
goddess Afrogeneia, because she was born from the foam of the sea…

She was the patron of sea-travellers.
Atheneus, a Greek author, narrated that a rich merchant from Naucratis in Egypt, called Erostrate,
had come as a pilgrim to the sanctuary of Aphrodite in Palaipafos. There he bought a small figurine of goddess.

On his trip back his ship weathered a storm.
All the passengers in great fear begged the statue of Aphrodite to save them.

Her temples were often built on top of hills, as at Palaipafos and Amathus.
